Changes in store for Fall Friends book sale

At the May 11 Friends Board meeting, the following changes were approved for the Friends book sale beginning with the fall sale, October 24-29, 2016:

  1. All day on the Wednesday of the sale, anyone can enter the sale but current Friends members will receive a 50% discount on the items they purchase.
  2. On both Friday and Saturday, everything will be on sale to everyone (regardless of Friends membership) for $5.00 per grocery bag full.

As usual, the sale will align with the Library’s open hours, Monday through Wednesday 10-8, Thursday and Friday 10-5 but on Saturday the sale will close before the Library does.  Sale hours on Saturday, October 29 will be 10-3.

Friends memberships can be purchased or renewed at the door of the sale or at the checkout desk of the Library at any time.

May notes

  • The Friends’ spring book sale netted over $6,000 for the Library.
  • The last Friends Board meeting of the fiscal year will be held Wednesday, May 11 at 3:00 PM in the Rogers Room of the Forest Grove City Library, 2114 Pacific Ave.  The budget for the coming fiscal year will be discussed and may be adopted.  Board meetings will be, as usual, suspended until September.
  • Beginning in September, board meetings will continue to be held on the second Wednesday of the month but the starting time will be 6:30 PM.  Meetings are open to the public.

On-going book sale begins in the Library

Friends are now selling donated books in the Library all the time!  Look for a magenta book truck in the main entrance area.  You’ll find donated books in great condition with new stock on a regular basis.  Prices are marked on green stickers just inside the cover.  Most are going for $3.  Pay at the Circulation (or “checkout”) desk: cash or checks, please.three

As ever, all proceeds go to the Library!

What happens to the books you donate?

Books and other materials donated to the Forest Grove City Library are first reviewed by Library Staff to see if they should be added to the Library’s inventory.

For those that are not selected, and for books de-selected from the Library collection by staff, Friends of the Library volunteers check used book prices online to pick out those that are valued at $8 or more. Most of them will be put on sale at under Friends’ dealership name, “forestgrovelibraryfriends.”  Friends have more than 1,200 books on sale through Amazon and these online sales will net more than $5,000 for the Library during the Friends fiscal year.

Books in good condition that are not selected for online sales are sorted by Friends volunteers for the twice-a-year book sales and for ongoing sales in the library. The twice-a-year sales are Friends’ primary income source.  They have been making about $10,000 a year.  The ongoing in-library sales are a new Friends project.

Books left over from the twice-a-year sales are picked up by a private company, Better World Books. They sell books online and they also send books overseas to private non-profit organizations.  They also  provide us free boxes, free pick-up and give us a portion of their proceeds from sale of our books.

Making money for the Library is Friends’ first strategic priority but this process for library donations and discards has other benefits: (1) Between donations and discards, the library has around 12,000 books to dispose of every six months, (2) turning donations away would be bad for the Library’s public relations, (3) friends efforts make money for library programs and help recirculate these books in our own community.

Spring Book Sale, April 18-23

The Friends Spring Book Sale will take place Monday, April 18 through Saturday, April 23 in the Rogers Room of the Forest Grove City Library, 2114 Pacific Avenue in Forest Grove.

Sale Hours are coordinated with Library open hours: Monday, April 18, 10-8, Tuesday, April 19, 10-8, Wednesday, April 20, 10-8 Thursday, April 21, 10-5 Friday, April 22, 10-5 Saturday, April 23, 10-3

Books, videos, CDs, vinyl records…all priced to sell!  Tables will be restocked every day.

Membership has its privileges!

On Saturday, April 23 (10:00-3:00), current members may fill a standard grocery bag with books and pay just $5 for the bag full.  This benefit is similar to the bag full sales of the past BUT current Friends membership is required.

Your library card does not make you a member of Friends of the Library.  Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization that has been helping the Forest Grove Library since 1973.  You need to sign up for Friends membership and pay for your annual membership fee.  Your membership year will begin when you pay your dues. If you purchased or renewed your membership at the fall book sale (October, 2015) your membership will be valid for this sale in April.  More than 40 people joined Friends at the last sale.

Memberships can be purchased or renewed at the door of the book sale.  Dues were increased, for the first time in decades, in July, 2015. Individual one-year memberships are now $10, Family memberships $20, Contributing memberships $35 and Sustaining memberships $100.  A membership form is also available on this website: see the “join’ page.

Dealer Alert:  Friends volunteers have carefully combed through donations and library discards, looking for items that Friends can sell online.  Books and other media that we think we can sell online for $8 or more won’t be on sale at this twice-a-year on-site book sale.

You can help: As always, we have several volunteer opportunities.  More than seventy peopled helped with the sale in October.

  • We need help with set-up and take-down.  Strong backs and willing hearts are needed to move boxes of books from two rooms in the Library to the Rogers Room on Tuesday, April 12 between 3:00 and 7:00.
  • Volunteers are also needed to put books on shelves and tables before the sale, during the day, April 12-15.
  • Another vital job is taking two-hour shifts cashiering during the days of the sale.
  • A final, big effort is required after 3:00 on Saturday, April 23. The remaining books have to be boxed and the room cleaned up after the sale.

Those who help with set-up, “minding the store” and clean-up get to take two free books for their efforts, and all book sale volunteers are invited to join us for a Dutch treat dinner after clean-up is completed on Saturday.

If you are interested in helping make the book sale a success, please call Mike Smith 503 530-9353 or email

And of course, we welcome book donations any time!  Please bring books that are in good condition to the Library.  Library staff tells us that Wednesday evenings are the best time to bring books to the Library.

Fall Book Sale earns over $5,000

The Friends Fall Used Book sale in November netted $5,029.95 thanks to a cadre of volunteers headed by Carol Woodford.  That total was a substantial increase over recent sales that have run between four thousand and forty-five hundred dollars.

Carol attributes the increase to three changes made for this sale.  One was stripping the Mylar plastic covers from many of the library discards in the sale.  The second was elimination of the five-dollars-a-bag-full sale on Saturday.  The third was enabling customers to pay by credit card.

The objective of the sale is to raise funds for the Library.  These funds go to teen and children’s programs, including Summer Reading, cultural programs–music, lectures, and even simulated radio dramas–produced by Friends, and furniture and equipment for the Library.  The twice a year used book sales are by far the biggest income source for our Friends of the Library.

A great deal of preparation is needed between sales.  Patron-donated and library-discarded books are reviewed for sale online.  The vast majority are then sorted and boxed for the sale.  Carol noted that library discards without their plastic Mylar jackets sell better.   More volunteers are needed for this additional process and to help with all the other tasks related to Friends’ book sales.  If you’re interested, give Carol a call at 503 357-2606 or email

Friends used book sale goes online

In addition to Friends’ twice yearly book sales at the Library, we have begun selling donated books online.  Friends has become one of the many organizations selling through Amazon.  We list books in Amazon’s huge database and have the advantage of participating in that gigantic marketplace.  So far 80 books have been listed and 11 sold at an average sales price of over $24.
If you would like to see all the books we have for sale online, go to Amazon, choose the book catagory for your search and enter forestgrovelibraryfriends in the search box.
We need more books!  The books you donate to the Forest Grove City Library are (1) considered for addition to the Library, (2) checked for prices online–those with low prices over $10 are usually added to our Amazon listings–or, (3) the books are sold at our twice a year sale.
Please give us your unwanted books!  Just drop them off at the Library or call the Library 503-992-3247  to arrange to have them picked up by Friends volunteers.
Every cent Friends makes goes toward your Forest Grove community library!
